Communications

Varela Senior High School’s Communications Academy provides students with the ability to study in a wide range of Mass Communications which include: Television Production, Newspaper, Yearbook, and Creative Writing. South Florida is a hub for Communication Networks and our programs provide students with the skills that can be used as a bridge to the Communications profession.

Students that participate in Television Productions will participate in live daily broadcasts. Students will have an opportunity to learn how to anchor, edit, and film news. Varela’s Television Production studio is outfitted with furniture donated by NBC Channel 6.

Students that participate in the Newspaper Program will learn hands-on journalism skills. Students create a school-wide newspaper that is distrtibuted on a monthly basis; all article topics are student driven.
