The Health Science Dental Aide Academy of Choice at Varela offers students the opportunity to earn a Certification as a Dental Aide at the end of their Junior year in high school. This course aims to teach students skills related to content knowledge in dental procedures, terminology, equipment and dental instrument training necessary for success in a career in the Dental Industry. During the Senior year of high school, the student will be working in a clinical setting earning credit hours towards the Dental Assisting Certificate.

Immediately upon high school graduation, the student will be enrolled in a post– secondary program to complete one summer trimester of clinical hours and complete their Dental Assisting Program.

The student will also be offered the opportunity to earn a certification as a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA).

Courses:

Health Science and Human Anatomy (Freshman Year 1) • This course consists of the study of the human body, both structurally and functionally with emphasis on the physiology and transmission of disease. Medical terminology is an integral part of the course. 

Health Science Foundations (Sophomore Year 2) • This course is designed to provide the student with an in-depth knowledge of the health care system and associated occupations. Emphasis is placed on communication and interpersonal skills, use of technology, ethics and development of critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Students will also learn first aid skills and demonstrate the measurement of vital signs along with Basic Life Support. (CPR Certification)

Dental Aide 1 (Junior Year 3) • This course provides classroom theory and practical application in tasks related to dental office asepsis, sterilization and disinfection procedures in the dental environment, and the learning of the tooth anatomy.  It is designed to prepare completers for employment as Dental Aides specializing as Dental Sterilization Technicians. It also provides an introduction to Dentistry and the Dental Assisting career paths.

Dental Aide 2 & Practical Internship (Senior Year 4) • This course is designed for students to gain practical hands-on knowledge of the field from accredited and experienced practices in the area. Students may shadow professionals throughout the course.
